SEASON ONE

Lizz Wright | Melanie Charles | Endea Owens | Joshua Starkman | Mariel Bildsten

Lizz Wright makes quiche at her cafe Carver 47

Lizz Wright is a world-renowned singer-songwriter and vocalist straddling the worlds of blues, gospel and jazz. We caught up with her at her café Carver 47 where she made two quiches and connected her upbringing in rural Georgia to the work she’s doing in Chicago. She was joined with her longtime collaborator, guitarist Adam Levy.

Melanie Charles makes creole-style lobster tail

Melanie Charles is a world-traveling polymath from Haiti via Brooklyn, NY. She is a hip-hop producer, bandleader, curator, songwriter, flutist, vocalist and a home cook. She invited keyboardist Zacchae'us Paul and fused tradition and modern flyness when making a creole style lobster tail.

Joshua Starkman makes matzoh brei

Josh Starkman is a guitarist and content creator and the self-elected smiling musical mayor of New Orleans. He brought his infectious, positive spirit to the kitchen to make the traditional Jewish food “matzoh brei”, but had to first call his Nana to make sure he got it right.

Endea Owens makes BBQ chicken

Endea Owens has earned notoriety as a bassist, bandleader, and a member of house band for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She even named her group: The Cookout. So, it should come as no surprise that the Detroit-native throws down in the kitchen. She made BBQ chicken for us inspired by her late aunt Doris.

Mariel Bildsten makes san rival cake

Mariel Bildsten is trombonist and bandleader from Southern California via NYC operating in all styles and genres. For our shoot in Harlem, she invited her friend pianist Sean Mason to workshop a newly written Latin jazz tune, and introduce us to her family’s take on the san rival cake.
